EPIC

One month from today, an epic show will go down at the Skihouse. THE SPITS are coming to town, all the way from Seattle. The Spits have been ruling it for over a decade now, and it is fucking awesome that we will have the chance to see them play in a basement in Carbondale, and for only $6 (you could see them headline Hozac Records Blackout Fest the day before for $20.. or in Memphis at the Hi-Tone the day after for $8.. we're getting lucky.) They've got 4 S/T LPs you should get familiar with, out on Thriftstore, Dirtnap, Slovenly, and Nickel & Dime Records (not to mention a split with NOFX on Fat Wreckchords..) and they are all pretty much killer. Word is the live show if off the chain, we can't wait to find out.

On top of that, Lafayette, Indiana's TV Ghost will be there too, bringing their Cramps meets Suicide shattered-creepy-post-punk rippers to the darkest corners of the basement. TV Ghost have not one, but two killer LPs out on In The Red Records, which should tell you all you need to know.

Local dudes Freedom Ride, who are getting so tight it is crazy, and The Shakes, who will have a new line-up, are playing too! Mark your calendar!

Tonight is a Good Night

Tonight (weather permitting..) is the first of what will be a weekly Friday Night Fair at the Town Square Pavilion (btwn Longbranch, Tres, Thai Taste, ABC). The fair is a new event with the purpose of promoting local culture and community in Carbondale. It is always free, will have live music by different bands every week, local food vendors, a farmers market, arts & crafts, community info, and kids activities. Nighty Night & Rob Jacobs are playing tonight, Swamp Tigers will be playing the next one on May 6th, and you will see lots of other rad bands there in the future, like Wild Murphy, Giant City Slickers, Parlor, Young Loves, Black Fortys, and more..

Tonight's schedule:

Kid Tiger
plays @ 6p
Rob Jacobs plays @ 7p
Nighty Night plays @ 8p

Vendors will always be there from 6-9p

**The fair is still going to happen if it rains a little, it is under the pavilion! It will only be canceled if it is crazy/lightning.

Tonight is also the benefit show Rainforest Rescue Panama, to raise money for la Asociación Panamericana para la Conservación (APPC), a grassroots, not-for-profit organization involved in wildlife rescue and rainforest conservation projects in the Central American country of Panama. These shows are always SO good, they transform the Hangar into a rainforest, there is a great lineup of bands, and a lot of other goodies, all for a good cause. There will be an Art Auction, Date Auction, Live Art, DJs, Comedy, and a Raffle!

Here is a rough schedule of who is playing when:

8p - Love Chant (Jazz Trio)
830p - Swamp Tigers
10p - Autonomy
11p - Red-Winged Blackbird
1130p - Comedy by Ross Kelly
1145p - Nighty Night
1230p - Mr Free & The Satellite Freakout

Wild Murphy

Haven't you heard? Brad Cole sez that Josh Murphy of Black Fortys has a new project with Chris Goode of The Shakes, called Wild Murphy & The New Year. They just released a limited 5-song EP for Record Store Day, it was recorded all-live with no overdubs, straight to 1/2" analog tape in the Skihouse basement, engineered by Carey Neal (of Harmonious Grey Radio on WDBX) and David Allen (of Nighty Night). Wild Murphy is playing tonight at PKs (for free!), with Rob Jacobs opening up, so you should probably swing by and see if he has any more of the EPs left. Here are two tracks from the EP:

Speaking of WDBX.. they are having their Spring Pledge Drive right now. It is pretty awesome to have such a great community radio station here in Carbondale, so why dontcha support them by making a donation to help keep it going! You can donate by calling 618.457.3691 or clicking here.

Live @ The Grand Ole Varsity

There is a pretty cool event happening this Thursday at the Varsity Theater. Here's the skinny straight from the horse's mouth, Curtis Conley describes it as "An evening of drinks and live music at the Varsity for the fist time ever. Bosco and Whiteford, Swamp Tigers, Giant City Slickers, and Stace England and Salt Kings will perform a 40-45 min set a piece with drinks during the intermission. Trying to start a new type of venue in Cdale. One where people can sit down and not have to stay up until 11 to hear. Come check out the theatre it looks really cool and could be our own little Grand Old Opry. While Technically and Legally speaking we cant call it a fundraiser, every single dollar of profit will be donated to the Varsity Center of Arts for the renovation of the big theatre. Matt Longville and I are working on this together and the Bands have been so kind to completely donate their time for this evening. Tickets will be $20 and there will be 150 of them available soon. We totally expect to sell out so stay tuned. Yes the have a beer/wine license so there will be drinks. So grab your sweetie for a night with some of the finest musicians in the area. Stay tuned!"

You can get tickets online here.

VOTE

City elections for Mayor and City Council members are TODAY, so please go vote. If you saw how pathetic the turnout for the primary was (I think I've seen more people at a basement show..), you should understand that every vote will definitely count in this election, and making our voices and desires heard could really change a number of things about our city. Get out there and do it! And tell your friends too! And everyone you see! PLEASE!
