“Someone might say, I don’t understand music; but most people experience music emotionally and would agree that music is an abstraction. You don’t need to put music into words right away – you just listen.”
-- David Lynch, in Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity
I have been listening to WAXAHATCHEE + SWEARIN' non-stop for months now, I have become quite familiar and definitely intimately involved with this music, but I’m at a loss for words to describe it really. There is such sincerity and beauty and exuberance and exposition – brutally honest lyricism, frantically catchy sugary sweet pop melodies [I’m describing two bands together here who are pretty different, except for shared genetics – Waxahatchee is Katie Crutchfield + lead vocalist of Swearin’ is Allison Crutchfield, twin sisters and both members of the beloved PS Eliot] – do these words mean anything though? You have to listen to understand maybe. You have to experience this music, it’s ready to make itself vulnerable and explode into your heart if you allow it.
SWEARIN' just released their first full-length LP on Salinas Records, fully establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with after stirring up the waters with their wildly successful demo released last year. WAXAHATCHEE's album, American Weekend, was released on Don Giovanni Records, home to our pals Screaming Females!

Ride It Out
There's a show going down on Sunday that should not be missed. The end of an era of sorts.. Freedom Ride will be playing their final show with master shredder Rob "Bobby" Jacobs. This lineup of Freedom Ride has been one of our personal fav Carby bands ever, and it will be sad to see them go. Fear not though, they will be continuing on, and will also be releasing an album of the material they have been playing over the last year. Parlor will also be playing, which is becoming quite a rare thing now that A. Leech has moved back out West. If you haven't picked up their new 7", you need to asap! Fuzzy shredders Ranch Ghost will be in town too, so come say hi!

Very excited that we will have Mr. Pujol in town from Nashville, TN, playing at Hangar 9 on Saturday. He has been busy.. after the Live LP he put out on Jack White's Third Man Records last year, and the Nasty, Brutish, and Short EP he released on Saddle Creek, he just dropped a special Reverse Vampire 7" for Record Store Day, and is about to release his debut LP United States of Being on Saddle Creek, which will hit the shelves June 5th.
Also playing the show are Young Loves, who are making a rare appearance that you never want to miss, Government Jobs, who just got off a 2-week tour, and Gnarly Brown.

If you were wondering what you're going to do tonight, there is a sweet little show going down at Hangar 9. Secondary Modern will be there, and they will likely be playing a lot of material off of their new album (which you can now buy on iTunes here). Also playing is a new band called The Pirouettes, who we've heard nothing but good things about, and Han Ma & The Camaros. Scope a track of the new Secondary Modern LP, we will be released with a show at John Brown's in Marion on June 1st.

WEI ZHONGLE
The first release by WEI ZHONGLE is finally here - and it is well worth the wait! The album was recorded live by David Allen at the Skihouse Annex on Feb. 19th, 2012 and was mixed, overdubbed, and edited in the following weeks by Rob Jacobs. The amount of time and careful attention that went into this album is definitely apparent - the final product is truly beautiful beyond words.
The album is now available for download on bandcamp and will hopefully be released in a physical format soon! Stay tuned for more information about the physical release (maybe with a corresponding release show?!) and an upcoming summer tour ~~~
The dissonant whirlwind that is Wei Zhongle feels like a tribal chore conjuring images of cyclical ceremonies from ancient cultures in a contemporary fashion. In entirety, the album feels inspired, full of joy for life in its most critical stages. The vocal melodies run wild over vast soundscapes comprised of traditional instruments rather than long synth arrangements, and when it is time for a played lead, the exchange is smooth and lively.

WILD 4/19
Hey friends, we've got a pretty rad show happening at the Big Muddy IMC tomorrow. As far as I know it is the first musical happening there since the improve forum. Since the IMC has been active lately simply as a public space, the show will be all ages and no drinking will be permitted. But, if you want to drink, a simple solution would be to take care of that before/during/afterward at a different location. Way easy.
ORANGE IGUANAS are a rad retro garage rock band from Appleton, Wisconsin who are on tour to support their brand new self release Hou Tian (listen below).
Carbondale natives HIGH HORSE (riffy badassness) and THESE MAGNIFICENT TAPEWORMS (super fun danceable surf) will be joining to round out the set. Should be awesome! See ya'll down there!
