Top 10 of 2010 by King Mike
We told our buddy Mike (of Screaming Females) that we were making year end lists and he sent us over this:

Dear Babiemecca,

This was a really hard list to make. I am pretty out of touch with the current state of independent music. I tried my hardest...

1. Shellshag- Rumors in Disguise (Probably should be 2 through 10 as well)

2. Stoned At Heart- Party Tracks Vol. 1 (Listened to this on repeat for 2 months straight)

3. PUJOL- Live at Third Man Records (I didn't know this existed ‘til just a few weeks ago. I heart Daniel)

4. Dead Dog- Don't Touch Me (Athens via Brooklyn and New Jersey. Fuck Yea!)

5. Ted Leo and the Pharmacists- The Brutalist Bricks (Great record. Great dudes.)

6. Sass Dragons (RIP)- New Kids on the Bong (So sad to see these guys go after such an incredible record)

7. Prizzy Prizzy Please- Chroma Cannon (Magic the Gathering)

8. Japanther- Rock 'n' Roll Ice Cream (Just heard this the other day...it’s that other Shellshag record that I wish came out this year)

9. Campo Formio- Spooky Fools (Puerto Rico. I'd try to describe it but I'd probably use the word angular and that's just dumb)

10. Silent Way- Less is Less (My annoying neighbors) ~OR~ Staring Problem, if that’s officially out yet...if not, 2011 for sure

It was a rad year for music in Carbondale.. a lot of killer bands came through, a few new Carbondale bands were formed and we've seen some rad shit from them already, Hangar 9 re-opened, the Swamp changed hands, people came together to help Lost Cross, Handsome Fest happened, and there were a lot of awesome local releases, from Parlor, Secondary Modern, Himalayas, Spokesmen, Young Loves, Black On Brown, Whistle Pigs, Sprickets, These Magnificent Tapeworms, and more. Good things are gonna happen in 2011, we're looking forward to it.

Oh and to take you out in style.. we've been sitting on this for most of the year, I guess it's time to let it out. For a brief moment the forces behind Spokesmen and Parlor merged to form Ooh Barracuda, wrote an album's worth of songs, and recorded these with Mike at Russian Recording in Bloomington, and were done with it. B Haley and A Leech on gee-tar, T Spray on bass, and DA on drums. Enjoy:

Killer Friday

2010 has been a pretty good one, but if you're still trying to get in a little more action, there is what will probably be one of the best shows of the year about to happen this Friday. Tweak Bird, Birth (from Chicago but featuring local boys Timmy Beaty and Joshy Russell), and Spokesmen will be playing the first of many great shows at Hangar 9 to come. Should be quite a party, I'd get there early if you want to see Spokesmen and avoid waiting in line to get in.. remember that shit?

Staring Problem Tape

Staring Problem is going to have a very limited 8-song cassette coming out Dec 21st, better scoop one before they're gone. If you don't... well do you really want to leave it to chance? The songs are jams, check it:

Batman Returns..

Probably everyone has heard by now.. Hangar 9 is going to be open again in a matter of days. Despite the rumors, it won't be open this weekend, and the B-40s/Himalayas show that was supposed to be there unfortunately got canceled because construction isn't quite done yet. We got the chance to look around inside yesterday and it is going to be a seriously insane place to see shows. Should be pertty cool. We also got a chance to look at the list of shows happening there in the next few months and it is pretty damn good. Here are some of the highlights that are happening really soon:

12/17: TWEAK BIRD, Spokesmen, Birth

12/18: Copyrights, Shithawk

12/23: Raccoon Valley Showcase w/ Sprickets, Whistle Pigs, The Heat Tape

1/13: The Generationals (new orleans), Shithawk

1/28: Lost In The Trees (chapel hill), n_____ n____

I'm sure there will be a lot more than that.. in fact I've already heard of a lot more than that but I can't remember the dates.. Nic has been doing a killer job booking there, so look out cause things are gonna get crazy fast. We're working on getting some stuff in there this spring that will blow yo mindzzz.

Just remembered we never posted the other half of the Handsome Fest vids we had.. look for the rest soon.

MECCA MIX 006

Our usual man of the mecca mix has been kicking so much ass lately we decided to give him a week off and let a guest get in on the action. Wanting to keep close to tradition, we subbed in David Brown for David VDG and gave him free rein. This is what he had to say about it:

"I put together a comp this morning because I'm extremely nervous about my cat being at the vet all day. I needed something else to focus on. Pop music. It's not an all-inclusive compilation...that would be impossible. It's not really even an accurate overview. Things are missing. Some of my favorite bands/songs didn't even make the cut. Some of it's a bit obvious (but, damn it, I love the Beatles and this isn't a contest). Regardless, I think it does a fine job of exhibiting how pop music can be unassuming/ornate, uplifting/depressing, sweet/snotty, uninformed/hyper-intelligent... and on and on and on."

Thanks DB. His new band is going to be playing at the Skihouse next Friday with Icarus Himself from Madison and Himalayas.

The Garden @ IMC Tonight

Tonight there is a pretty awesome film screening at the Big Muddy IMC: The fourteen-acre community garden at 41st and Alameda in South Central Los Angeles is the largest of its kind in the United States. Started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992, the South Central Farmers have since created a miracle in one of the country’s most blighted neighborhoods. Growing their own food. Feeding their families. Creating a community. But now, bulldozers are poised to level their 14-acre oasis.

The Garden
follows the plight of the farmers, from the tilled soil of this urban farm to the polished marble of City Hall. Mostly immigrants from Latin America, from countries where they feared for their lives if they were to speak out, we watch them organize, fight back, and demand answers. More info here.

There will also be a short by local filmmaker Alexa Nutile, Sustaining Selves, an experimental documentary about some inspiring people in Carbondale who do it themselves, from growing their food to publishing.

Nov. 28th / 6:00-7:30p
Big Muddy Independent Media Center
214 N. Washington St

We need to get something like this going here, doesn't this look good?

Get New

There is so much new stuff going on in Carby right now! There are at least 6 new bands we've heard about, some old ones coming back, venues opening, etc. We've got a hold of new recordings by some of your favorites that we'll be dropping on you soon, but right now it's time to talk about brand new bands that nobody has seen yet! Three of them are playing at the Lost Cross tonight, and the donations are going to Friends of the Lost Cross who are trying to keep that place running. Catholics & The Pill is a new band featuring Lauren and Alix of Staring Problem and Elizabeth of Small Time London Thug, I spied on them practicing the other night, shit is sweet! Witch Trial has played one show before but I think most people missed it, it is Nick from The Shakes, Not Healthy, and Conniption Fitts fame and Jake from Staring Problem, along with their assistant Alice. The band that you may have heard the most about is The Heat Tape, which is Brett from Shithawk and Copyrights along with Brooks from Sprickets and everyone's favorite Ben. They've been busy recording, you can buy their mp3s below. Doo it!

For Your Perusal...

2 MANY CREEPS

Long Live North Americans

One of our favorite bands to have ever existed in Carbondale was North Americans. They were only together from August 2007-April 2008, featured Chris and Marcus now of Nighty Night and Joe and Chris formerly of Goodship Badship, and never put out a release. Despite their limited tenure they had some of the most raw shows I can remember seeing, especially their shows at the Treehouse, and they were the beginning of some positive changes to the music scene here that are still being felt today. Thankfully those fine folks at the Skihouse have chronicled their brief existence with this full-length cassette tape they just put out. It has the three songs that North Americans recorded at the Skihouse (recorded by David Allen, David Williamson, and James Wilcox) as well as live recordings of the North Americans last two shows, at the now-defunct Boobys 4/12/08 and Hangar 9 4/24/08. Almost all of North Americans songs are on there, as well as a Black Sabbath cover and some other goodies. You can buy the tape on the Skihouse Webstore or at Plaza Records, it is limited to 20 copies, spray painted, numbered, and with stenciled covers. Get one while you can!
