'Tis The Season!

December is finally here! Don't let the weather get you down, we have loads of incredible shows lined up to ensure you don't have to spend your Friday night alone in your room wearing all the sweaters you own listening to Smog. Kicking things off, HUME from Washington, DC will be playing at Skihouse this Friday! Some of the most interesting music I've heard in awhile, so stoked for this show - they've been on the road for awhile already, heading all around the country for an 80 day tour, whoa!! You don't want to miss this!!!

"Hume kicked off five years ago, the constantly metamorphosing product of guitarist/bassist/
composer Britton Powell’s high school philosophy class daydreams and basement-recording sessions.

... In these early days, Hume was hard to pin down. One minute it was a solo-project, the next it was a group of free-form improvisers, then a string quartet, and finally a full-fledged band performing expansive prog-rock in a giant octopus-shaped sculpture. Whatever was going on, it was always interesting. The last touring line-up of the group featured two drummers, two basses, and three saxophones performing a single 30-minute composition that Powell wrote during a six-month trip to India.

But somewhere during the last two years, Powell decided that the constant line-up changes were not getting him where he wanted to go.

Inspired in equal parts by James Brown’s touring band and the prog-rock titans of yesteryear, Powell decided that it was time to buckle-down and get tight. He rallied the heads together--recruiting drummer and long time collaborator Wilson Kemp (Macaw), bassist/multi-instrumentalist Joey Doubek (Mass Movement of the Moth) and guitarist, Peter Tran . Months of rehearsals followed. The group dug in deep, cloistering themselves in a group house basement for rigorous practice sessions—trying to find the balance between composition and spontaneity, to figure out how to ride knotty prog-riffs into deep trasnplendent bliss-outs.

The band just released a new 7" with two tracks, 'Inverse Fireworks' and 'One Drug'. A follow up to last year's enigmatic EP, Penumbra, the 7" finds the band refining its sprawling sound with economy and focus."

SECONDARY MODERN will also be playing! I've lived in Carbondale for about three months now but I've managed to miss them every single time they've played so I'm really excited to finally be hearing them! They've been in the recording studio recently and we'll be sure to keep you informed as to when they make their release!

Wild Murphy Tape Release

Wild Murphy & The New Year just put the finishing touches on a new 11-song album, which is being released on cassette tape (and CD too?) this Saturday at Hangar 9. You can download the whole damn thing for free on their bandcamp, right here.

Check out some of the tracks below, this album is one of our favorite things that Mr. Murphy has done yet. Black Fortys just finished a killer full length album as well, Voodoo Moon, so Mr. Murphy has been a busy man. Rumor is that he is heading out of town for a while, so catch Wild Murphy this Saturday and Black Fortys next Saturday, as it will be your last chance for quite some time.

Big Muddy IMC

Super excited for tomorrow night's show at the Big Muddy Independent Media Center (IMC) with Br'er and Wei Zhongle! It's been awhile since we've heard from Carbondale's own super-group, Wei Zhongle - their performance tomorrow will be a lovely way to start out the night (and they just might have some incredibly exciting news for us!! Stay tuned). Br'er have played in Carbondale twice before and have a true affinity for our town - their performances are captivating and intimate, and I believe the environment at the IMC will really suit them well. The IMC has long been a wonderful open space committed to providing the community with an outlet for creative programming, media, shows, etc. Many people have come together over the past year to fix several structural problems that the space had, including an extremely leaky roof. The space will be open on a more frequent basis now and everyone and anyone is welcome to come check the space out - there will be fair-trade coffee brewed throughout the day and cozy couches where you can sit and read various books & zines from our library! Tomorrow night's show is a welcoming event where you can find out more about the IMC and upcoming events; it will be an alcohol and drug free event to ensure that people of all ages can attend and to ensure a respectful environment - thank you!

TONIGHT!!

Siren Songs from VANCOUVER, BC are playing at Lost Cross tonight!! They're female-fronted "lefty-eyed dreamboat punk" - if you're like me and have no clue what that means, have a listen:

Tonight will also be Samata's first show! "Dark, noisy punk like UNWOUND or HAMMERHEAD. If you wish DISCHORD and AMREP were still active labels, you'll dig this." And also playing, Black On Brown - "Carbondale's own noise-sludge punk"!

"This is the one song everyone
would like to learn: the song
that is irresistable:
the song that forces men
to leap overboard in squadrons
even though they see the beached skulls
the song nobody knows
because anyone who has heard it
is dead, and the others can't remember
Shall I tell you the secret
and if I do, will you get me
out of this bird suit?
I don't enjoy it here
squatting on this island
looking picturesque and mythical
with these two feathery maniacs,
I don't enjoy singing
this trio, fatal and valuable.
I will tell the secret to you,
to you, only to you.
Come closer. This song
is a cry for help: Help me!
Only you, only you can,
you are unique

At last. Alas
it is a boring song
but it works every time."

SMiLE

The Beach Boys long-lost album SMiLE is finally seeing the light of day in an official release, and Plaza Records is throwing a listening party tonight to celebrate. While we're definitely fans, we're no experts on this topic, so we checked in with our favorite Plaza employee (and Secondary Modern guitarist) David Brown, and this is what he had to say about it:

When I was a kid I didn't like the Beach Boys. Well, that's unfair. Every 5 year old likes "Kokomo". Every single one of them. When I was 17 I listened to Pet Sounds in its entirety for the first time. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" was on the same compilation that every home in the Midwest seemed to be required to have. It dawned on me there in my 17th year that I had never actually paid attention to its musicality. Is that an accordion? Those drums! Who plays bass like that? Suddenly I couldn't envision this band on the beach, innocently flirting with blondes while wearing striped shirts and chino pants. Why the hell didn't anybody tell me? The more I dug into this band the more I realized that this was not a sudden leap into deeper composition. Those surf songs had it too. Just who IS this Brian Wilson? I couldn't help but wonder.

I started looking for more and found bootlegs of the unfinished SMiLE sessions, the album meant to follow Pet Sounds which was abandoned in an extended fit of mental illness. There's not much I can say about it in a concise way. I have, without even noticing it happening, cornered people to rattle off my impressions of this recording too many times. Let's just put it this way: there are very few bands who can make me sit and stare at the wall in wonder while i listen to their unmixed, unfinished session tapes. The official release of this album--edited together to make the best version of the SMiLE album available--is more than just a little exciting to me.

This album is dense, but it is not just heavy. It is heavy and light and dark and absolutely silly. There is nothing like it and there will never be anything like it. If it had been released as planned in 1967 everything about pop music would be different. Here we are though. It's 2011. No matter. The historical context of this album melts away as soon as it begins. This is modern music.

Fall Back

I've been sort of obsessed with Fat History Month since I first saw them two years ago - their live performance is mesmerizing, their music shifts beautifully and unexpectedly - they are the real deal. The duo from Boston released their latest album "Fucking Despair" from Sophomore Lounge Records, home to great bands such as Skimask and our friends State Champion. They're coming out to the Midwest for a mini-tour prior to their performance at the Cropped Out Music Festival next weekend in Louisville, KY featuring acts such as Scratch Acid and Sun Araw. We're also quite lucky to have Slow Walker from Milwaukee, WI stopping through our town while they're on a short weekend tour! And Carbondale's own Dan Sentighty! It'll be quite a night!

More Info:

"The chemistry between Mark (drums) and Sean (vox/guitar) puts most two-pieces to shame. The perfectly toned reverb is well set to a meticulous wave of drums and cymbal taps, creating a constant building and relieving of tension."

Rob Jacobs Ensemble

Remember the Rob Jacobs Ensemble that existed from summer 2010 til summer 2011? They were one of the best bands to see live, and we were always wishing that they had recorded versions like they played them live, in addition to the studio versions of the songs that Rob did solo. Well, they popped into the studio recently and laid down 10 tracks, with everything done completely live, to document their time together. We're sad this band is around anymore, and we're so stoked to finally hear these recordings! Rob Jacobs has a lot of new stuff happening now, with both Wei Zhongle and Freedom Ride, and it is all pretty amazing. Rumor is he has more tricks up his sleeve that we will be hearing soon.. we hope that is true!

Unless you'll be in another country you really ought to not miss YellowFever this Thursday (10/6) at Skihouse! The lovely duo from Austin, Texas have a sound of their own that's pretty hard to pin down in words - awhile back Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney reviewed their self-titled release and came up with "haunted-house surf music" and "minimalist opera." YellowFever is actually playing a bunch of shows in the next two weeks with Brownstein's new project Wild Flag so I guess she liked what she heard, and I think you will too!! Woodsman has a slew of records out, including ones on hip labels like Mexican Summer and Lefese, and has received praise on both Pitchfork and Stereogum, among other places. Ty Segall On The Move

Man I try not to talk about it because I feel like we've gushed enough.. but Ty Segall just keeps on killing it!! If you haven't got to hear his new LP, Goodbye Bread, which came out on Drag City a few months back, it is definitely one of the best jams of the summer. We've been trying to get him back to Carby for a while, but it keeps falling through. If you're like us though, you can't wait and maybe you should go see him play one of the two amazing shows he is playing close by this week! He is playing at Exit/In in Nashville tomorrow for only $6, with Heavy Cream and D. Watusi (who both rule), and then he is playing at Goner Fest 8 in Memphis on Thursday!

OH, and Mikal Cronin is playing both of those shows as well! THAT SHOULD SEAL THE DEAL!! He is the man behind Moonhearts (who you may remember blew us away last summer), has released albums with Ty, and just released his solo debut TODAY on one of our fav labels, Chicago's Trouble In Mind. Those shows will rule!

And I almost forgot the whole reason I wanted to make this post! I just heard that this year we will also see the release of Ty Segall - Singles 2007-2010 LP from Goner Records on November 22. I snagged this from him last summer on cassette via Psychic Snerts, and DAMN it is good. I am always scared I will wear the tape out, because it hass all the hard to find jams, but fear not, the vinyl version is coming! That makes 4, yes FOUR, 12" LP releases for Ty Segall in 2011. Almost keeping up with Thee Oh Sees..

NEW PUJOL

Our Nashville pal Daniel Pujol recently inked a deal with Saddle Creek Records to release his new EP, which will be coming out on October 4th. One of the tracks was featured on NPR's All Songs Considered today, and it sounds pretty damn good! OH YEAH, he is playing at Hangar 9 next Thursday with Turbo Fruits and The Shakes, I'll bet he will even have the new EP! Can't wait.

Have You Heard??

THE SWAMP is back! And we're here to assure you that tomorrow will not be your typical Monday night. Three bands from Allston, Massachusetts will be invading our town & you don't want to miss them! PILE is one of my favorite bands & I cannot express how thrilled I am to have the chance to show them to you all!! HUNNIE BUNNIES and CHRONIC SPELLS have been touring together for the past few weeks and their unusual performance is certainly something to witness! We're also extremely lucky to have FREEDOM RIDE & WEI ZHONGLE playing for us! They're both from Carbondale but they don't play that often so now's your chance to see them!! I know many of you may be appalled by the 8PM start time but please come early because we have a lot of bands and we don't want to run too late and disturb the neighbors - we want to keep having shows throughout the year! Yeah! Hope to see you tomorrow - I'm new to town and would love to meet you all!!

D CUBED

Tomorrow our buddy Daniel Francis Doyle will be coming to town, all the way from Austin, Texas. He played the Skihaus last fall with Flight from Mississippi and Himalayas, and he blew a lot of minds with his intense, no-nonsense 1-man show, which is probably the finest example of 1-man-band-itry we have ever seen. He has just started performing with two additional members, so this show will be one of the first chances anyone outside of Austin has had to experience the new lineup. Dan Senteighty and Dolphin Logic (a new synth duo comprised of Drunk Virago's Howard Steeley and James McKain) will finish out the night.

Lost In The Voodoo Moon

Everybody should know this by now.. Lost In The Trees from North Carolina are making their epic return to Hangar 9 tonight. If you didn't see the show they played there with Nighty Night in January, it was definitely one of the most impressive shows to go down at the Hangar yet, and this one is sure to be even better. Black Fortys will close the show, and will have a few special pre-release copies of their new LP VOODOO MOON.. more on that later, but they will have a special 10+ person lineup tonight to recreate all the crazyness from the album. Should be awesome.

Royal Baths

Super excited that one of our favorite bands, Royal Baths, are going to be coming through Carby on Saturday. They are from San Francisco, and their debut LP Litanies (out on Woodsist Records) was one of the best records to come out last year IMHO. Nighty Night will be playing as well, and a special supergroup with members of a lot of your fav bands.. don't miss it!

Diarrhea Planetzzz

A whole bunch of rad friends from Nashville TN will be rolling through town on Wednesday. The 4-guitar party assault of Diarrhea Planet will be there, maybe you remember them from Handsome Fest 2010 or playing with JEFF The Brotherhood this spring. They've got a new 7" that just came out on JEFF's Infinity Cat imprint, and they've got a full length LP coming out this fall via the same folks. We got to hear it while we were in Nashville recently, and it is killer. Big Surr, the surfy sister band of DP, will be making their first trip to Carby as well. Secondary Modern will open the show, and if you haven't got a chance to see them lately, they have new material that is not to be missed. Kev-o & The Jewels will close it out.

Small Bones from NOLA and new local band Bob Sacramano will be there as well. Wahh!

Nighty Night Tour & Varsity Show

Our pals Nighty Night are currently in the middle of an East Coast tour, and when they return they will be playing at the Varsity Theater, giving you the first chance to see some local bands play in the awesome sounding room without having to pay $10+. The show is a benefit for The Science Center of Southern Illinois, so the $5 advance / $7 door ticket price is going to a good cause. Also playing is Wei Zhongle (aka Rob Jacobs Ensemble II, aka China Band), and if you haven't had a chance see them yet, they are amazing and are playing some of the most interesting music we've ever seen in Carbondale. Doors for the show open at 7:30p, and the show starts promptly at 8:oop. Advance tickets are available at Plaza Recs, P-mac, and the Practice Pad. More info here.
