Local ripperz The Jewels celebrated the release of their debut CD this weekend, if you were there you know how awesome a show it was. You can download the 10-song album on their bandcamp, or scoop a physical copy at P-mac or Plaza Records.

“Someone might say, I don’t understand music; but most people experience music emotionally and would agree that music is an abstraction. You don’t need to put music into words right away – you just listen.”
-- David Lynch, in Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity

I have been listening to WAXAHATCHEE + SWEARIN' non-stop for months now, I have become quite familiar and definitely intimately involved with this music, but I’m at a loss for words to describe it really. There is such sincerity and beauty and exuberance and exposition – brutally honest lyricism, frantically catchy sugary sweet pop melodies [I’m describing two bands together here who are pretty different, except for shared genetics – Waxahatchee is Katie Crutchfield + lead vocalist of Swearin’ is Allison Crutchfield, twin sisters and both members of the beloved PS Eliot] – do these words mean anything though? You have to listen to understand maybe. You have to experience this music, it’s ready to make itself vulnerable and explode into your heart if you allow it.

SWEARIN' just released their first full-length LP on Salinas Records, fully establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with after stirring up the waters with their wildly successful demo released last year. WAXAHATCHEE's album, American Weekend, was released on Don Giovanni Records, home to our pals Screaming Females!

Ride It Out

There's a show going down on Sunday that should not be missed. The end of an era of sorts.. Freedom Ride will be playing their final show with master shredder Rob "Bobby" Jacobs. This lineup of Freedom Ride has been one of our personal fav Carby bands ever, and it will be sad to see them go. Fear not though, they will be continuing on, and will also be releasing an album of the material they have been playing over the last year. Parlor will also be playing, which is becoming quite a rare thing now that A. Leech has moved back out West. If you haven't picked up their new 7", you need to asap! Fuzzy shredders Ranch Ghost will be in town too, so come say hi!

SPOOK HOUSES will hopefully be swinging by Carbondale in early August, so make sure to stay tuned!

The first release by WEI ZHONGLE is finally here - and it is well worth the wait! The album was recorded live by David Allen at the Skihouse Annex on Feb. 19th, 2012 and was mixed, overdubbed, and edited in the following weeks by Rob Jacobs. The amount of time and careful attention that went into this album is definitely apparent - the final product is truly beautiful beyond words.

The album is now available for download on bandcamp and will hopefully be released in a physical format soon! Stay tuned for more information about the physical release (maybe with a corresponding release show?!) and an upcoming summer tour ~~~

The dissonant whirlwind that is Wei Zhongle feels like a tribal chore conjuring images of cyclical ceremonies from ancient cultures in a contemporary fashion. In entirety, the album feels inspired, full of joy for life in its most critical stages. The vocal melodies run wild over vast soundscapes comprised of traditional instruments rather than long synth arrangements, and when it is time for a played lead, the exchange is smooth and lively.

WILD 4/19

Hey friends, we've got a pretty rad show happening at the Big Muddy IMC tomorrow. As far as I know it is the first musical happening there since the improve forum. Since the IMC has been active lately simply as a public space, the show will be all ages and no drinking will be permitted. But, if you want to drink, a simple solution would be to take care of that before/during/afterward at a different location. Way easy.

ORANGE IGUANAS are a rad retro garage rock band from Appleton, Wisconsin who are on tour to support their brand new self release Hou Tian (listen below).

Carbondale natives HIGH HORSE (riffy badassness) and THESE MAGNIFICENT TAPEWORMS (super fun danceable surf) will be joining to round out the set. Should be awesome! See ya'll down there!

Holographic Dreamingg

Speaking of new jams, this past week local duo Dolphin Logic dropped their debut, Holographic Dreamingg, on Oakland's Tundra. It has been getting peeped about all over the internets, from showing up on an Impose Magazine hot new release list (among heavy hitters like Zola Jesus, Frankie Rose, The Babies, etc.), all the way to France. Congrats, boys. Snag the download for only 1.99.

New Year, New Jams

Been takin' a little break for the holidays.. but we're back and have a lot of news to share over the next few weeks.

Seems like almost every band in Carby has been in the studio in some form or another, so we've got a lot of new releases to look forward to over the next few months. 3 bands who will all have new releases out soon are playing together at Hangar 9 tonight, so if you wanna catch the new material in action now is your chance.

Secondary Modern just put the finishing touches on their newest 12-song record, here is a little sneak peak:

Kid Tiger just finished their second EP, Sleep, you can stream the tracks on their bandcamp and we imagine they'll be having a release show very soon.

The Jewels have also been in the studio working on a full-length album, we haven't got any leaks of that yet, but you can check out a few songs they recorded not too long ago that have been on the hush until now:

Dolphin Logic, Parlor, Staring Problem, Autonomy, Brett Haley, Nighty Night, Wei Zhongle, Freedom Ride, and more have stuff on the way too!

Black Fortys new album VOODOO MOON has finally hit the interworld, and you can download it for free for a limited time only at their bandcamp!

Staring Problem just announced that they have a 7" coming out on BLVD Records this spring, and they're already at work on a followup release as well.

Wei Zhongle is about to head into the studio, but here is a live recording from the show they played with Tweak Bird last month that sounds killer! Can't wait for the record.
