Tonight there is a pretty awesome film screening at the Big Muddy IMC: The fourteen-acre community garden at 41st and Alameda in South Central Los Angeles is the largest of its kind in the United States. Started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992, the South Central Farmers have since created a miracle in one of the country’s most blighted neighborhoods. Growing their own food. Feeding their families. Creating a community. But now, bulldozers are poised to level their 14-acre oasis. The Garden follows the plight of the farmers, from the tilled soil of this urban farm to the polished marble of City Hall. Mostly immigrants from Latin America, from countries where they feared for their lives if they were to speak out, we watch them organize, fight back, and demand answers. More info here.
There will also be a short by local filmmaker Alexa Nutile, Sustaining Selves, an experimental documentary about some inspiring people in Carbondale who do it themselves, from growing their food to publishing.
Nov. 28th / 6:00-7:30p Big Muddy Independent Media Center

We need to get something like this going here, doesn't this look good?
There is so much new stuff going on in Carby right now! There are at least 6 new bands we've heard about, some old ones coming back, venues opening, etc. We've got a hold of new recordings by some of your favorites that we'll be dropping on you soon, but right now it's time to talk about brand new bands that nobody has seen yet! Three of them are playing at the Lost Cross tonight, and the donations are going to Friends of the Lost Cross who are trying to keep that place running. Catholics & The Pill is a new band featuring Lauren and Alix of Staring Problem and Elizabeth of Small Time London Thug, I spied on them practicing the other night, shit is sweet! Witch Trial has played one show before but I think most people missed it, it is Nick from The Shakes, Not Healthy, and Conniption Fitts fame and Jake from Staring Problem, along with their assistant Alice. The band that you may have heard the most about is The Heat Tape, which is Brett from Shithawk and Copyrights along with Brooks from Sprickets and everyone's favorite Ben. They've been busy recording, you can buy their mp3s below. Doo it!
Saturday Nov. 27 The Heat Tape + Witch Trial ++Catholics & The Pill @ Lost Cross 10p, Donations go to F.O.T.L.C

Eat some pealla for me boys.
One of our favorite bands to have ever existed in Carbondale was North Americans. They were only together from August 2007-April 2008, featured Chris and Marcus now of Nighty Night and Joe and Chris formerly of Goodship Badship, and never put out a release. Despite their limited tenure they had some of the most raw shows I can remember seeing, especially their shows at the Treehouse, and they were the beginning of some positive changes to the music scene here that are still being felt today. Thankfully those fine folks at the Skihouse have chronicled their brief existence with this full-length cassette tape they just put out. It has the three songs that North Americans recorded at the Skihouse (recorded by David Allen, David Williamson, and James Wilcox) as well as live recordings of the North Americans last two shows, at the now-defunct Boobys 4/12/08 and Hangar 9 4/24/08. Almost all of North Americans songs are on there, as well as a Black Sabbath cover and some other goodies. You can buy the tape on the Skihouse Webstore or at Plaza Records, it is limited to 20 copies, spray painted, numbered, and with stenciled covers. Get one while you can!
There is a new show on WDBX Sundays 3:30-5:00p called Style City, run by Dave X's daughter Emma. Gotta be the youngest (and probably one of the coolest) radio DJ's around these parts, so tune in today for her first show! 91.1 FM doo it.
Resident prog-soul wonder-boy Rob Jacobs has a new album out, and you can download it for free (or for a donation, help a brotha out) on his bandcamp here. We're looking forward to seeing him play these songs live, start playing shows again dude!
Fresh off a tour of Asia, JUICEBOXXX from Milwaukee will be gracing the Skihouse on Thurs. Dec. 2nd. Juiceboxxx has quite a string of records and videos out, check them out (you can download his new album here), and he has toured opening for Public Enemy! Staring Problem will be playing too, don't wanna miss it!
